Your financial advisory team at Colorado Capital Management is led by:
Steven L. Ellis, CFA. Steve has worked in the financial and investment arena for more than 20 years. His early work in the field included teaching college courses in accounting and finance, consulting for a major accounting firm, and researching and acquiring investments as the chief due diligence officer of a national financial planning firm. Since 1989, he has managed large investment portfolios. Steve is the founder (in early 2000) and is the president of Colorado Capital Management. He holds the prestigious Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He has a business degree from the University of Colorado, magna cum laude, and a masters degree from Cornell University.
Steve is married, with two daughters, enjoys hiking, biking, skiing and tennis, and is actively involved in the community. He has served on the board and/or the finance or allocation committees of the endowment fund of the Allied Jewish Federation, the Boulder Jewish Community Center, Horizons K-8 School, Congregation Nevei Kodesh, 18 Pomegranates Seed Council and the Rose Community Foundation.
Hank Nicholson, CFP. Hank is a principal and the portfolio manager for Colorado Capital Management. He began his career in the investment field in 1993 as an account executive with a regional investment banking and brokerage firm. He later joined Charles Schwab & Co, where his roles included institutional trading, advising clients, and working with initial public offerings. In addition, he worked as a strategist and securities trader at a private hedge fund before becoming a portfolio manager with Colorado Capital Management. Hank holds dual degrees in English and Economics from the University of Colorado, as well as the Certified Financial Planner designation.
Hank has lived in Boulder since 1987. He and his wife Dia have five children (3 birth children and 2 adopted). Over the years, Hank has served on many non-profit boards and was most recently the Board Chair and Treasurer for Eastern Sun Academy.
Hank enjoys golf, cooking and crossfit.
Lee Strongwater, WMS. Lee is a principal and investment advisor at Colorado Capital Management. Lee holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University. He earned the credentials as a Wealth Management Specialist (WMS) from Kaplan University and has worked as a wealth manager since 2003. Prior to joining Colorado Capital Management, Lee was a managing partner at Strongwater-Schott, a fee-only investment management and financial planning firm in Denver. Prior to that, he was an entrepreneur and helped start and manage several small firms, including a children’s product company that went public in 2007. Lee has an in-depth understanding of the unique needs of business owners and helps them navigate the financial decisions that affect both their personal and business lives.
Lee is also an active volunteer for organizations serving children. Locally he is the vice president of the board of Trebol Soccer, a Boulder County youth soccer club. In addition, he is a board member of the Boulder-based Global Education Fund whose mission is to improve the lives of orphans and vulnerable children and teens around the world through education. Past board affiliations include Carriage House Community Table, the WOW Children’s Museum, Foothills United Way and Higher Ground. Lee has two daughters and in addition to parenting, enjoys hiking, skiing, sailing, and reading.
